Great to see so many people appreciating burbot. When I was young, people catching them on Simcoe would just hate them and throw so many of them onto the ice to kill them (no release). I remember coming back with an operator and seeing a bunch of them beside a garbage dumpster in the snow still moving. I got the feeling they didn;t like them because they didn't like how they felt when they had to unhook them and also thought they were bad for the lakers and whitefish. What a waste of fish.

Glad i was never part of that crowd. I first started targeting them 30 years ago in 1995. Was building a water treatment plant at a fly-in community in the Hudson Bay Lowlands and was taught their worth by the local First Nation Elders.

For sure. Until someone shows otherwise, people tend to avoid what look like slimy things. They are pretty amazing fish. I never got into targeting them though and in some lakes around here, the recommended eating levels are not great so I don't target them around here...and I don't fish night times anymore (even though you can get them in the day time, night seems to be better for most people).
