Hi Folks:
Drove up to check the lake/ice conditions late this afternoon and I was shocked/surprised with the conditions I observed today compared to a week ago.
The 3 feet of hard packed snow on top of a foot of slush on top of the ice surface I observed last week had basically evaporated and as a result I may have done a bit of a happy dance on the ice.
Specifically, I observed the following conditions this afternoon:
- the ice surface was completely exposed except for a light dusting of fresh snow on top which was blowing around due to wind - the ice surface was textured (as in a rough orange peel texture) which would be ideal for walkers, great for skidoos and I suspect ATV's would also be OK - please note I noticed there was an abandoned small ATV in the middle of the channel between the mainland and Snake Island (which I suspect will be rescued shortly) but anyone travelling through this area should keep an eye out for it to avoid any issues - I did not observe any snow drifts from the mainland in this area but I suspect there will be drifts in other parts of the lake due to the fact I doubt that all the snow that covered the lake a week ago has disappeared - there were clear skidoo tracks from the boat ramps at East Point Marina across to Snake Island, as well, skidoo tracks running parallel to the shore line running both east and west from the boat ramps. I would recommend staying on the skidoo paths if possible especially if travelling on an ATV if you encounter areas of snow cover - the ice hut operator who operates out of Island Grove (hunter green huts) has pulled his huts and clearly marked the holes with pine trees and I would recommend using caution when travelling in this area to avoid any problems.
Basically, it looks like the lake/ice conditions will be decent enough to head out on the lake this weekend, however, it goes without saying - whenever heading out on the ice to keep safety in mind, have fun and catch a couple of big fish.

Wind has been too crazy to head out on the lake for the past couple of days, unfortunately. Was up to 70Km/h last night, really blowing hard again today.
