My father in law and I usually do a trip every year for a couple of days. We have been going to pigeon lake but have decided to change it up… I was looking at honey harbour on the map, seems like a reasonable distance for us. Any of you guys have experience fishing that area? Just wondering if we can look forward to some better fishing than we’ve had on our trips….we’d most likely be looking to go in September after the gosd is over.

I was there last summer (mid august). Small mouth fishing was decent. pike fishing is supposed to be good and decent musky although I didn't target them. Didn't fish very hard but wasn't blown away by the fishing. It was just OK. Lot's of rocks i destroyed a prop. Be careful (I'm sure I won't be the last to mention the rocks to you when you mention Honey Harbour)

Thanks for the input Arnie, I think I’m gonna check out other options. My motor is pretty much brand new, I think I’ll hold off on introducing it to rocks for a little while at least

Good call Icemanjay. I purchased a new boat & motor last spring and fish mostly the Honey Harbour to Waubaushene area. I'm on my second prop already....and I think I'm pretty careful, always using my graph to look for rocks or shoals. Good Luck!

Wow fished the area for over 40 years and no props lost, but yes I have seen many people losing them. I am very careful to watch water levels and have chosen paths that I regularly take. I also use Avionics or lake charts religiously.

Once upon a time a very inexperienced me whacked my skeg and prop on a rock in Jack lake. It scared the crap out of me! I was looking at my fish finder and everything seemed fine until it wasn’t haha. Experience in an area is key, either that or be careful! Not sure where we’ll end up but have a couple more ideas up my sleeve that I’m looking at as well.

Arnie
I think Navionics or a good chart system is key. It helps to identify the channels and keep you on course.
It's also so easy to get turned around amongst the islands. LOL So at least you can see your trail to get back to the launch.
But that is pretty much the case for any section of eastern Gbay.

You're right longfish about watching water levels. I didn't, and it cost me. I'd been over the same section of shallow water many, many times, but this one time, I hit the prop really hard, resulting in most of the damage. The water level drop was the reason I had to have my prop repaired. I didn't notice the water level change....my bad. City Propeller,in Mississauga are fantastic by the way. Thanks for the reminder.

Cheers,
Yes those rocks are unforgiving. I skim right through the rocks, especially around green island.....it's not for the faint of heart. I also know where all the rocks are having fished there for years and years.

I’ll never forget a spot I once saw on the French, there’s a long rock that comes out of nowhere just east of dry pine bay. The water was low that year and the rock looked like a rainbow with the amount of boat paint on it!

I used to stay at Dry Pine Camp. Years and years ago.

I agree with Icemanjay, many rocks have numerous 'resistance badges'. I contributed to a nice white strip on a huge rock directly under the train tracks on the lower French River. With the swirling water, t## wasn't visible. That rock got me good. Something happened to the motor as it wouldn't idle down below 2200 rpms. I got it over to Hartley Bay Marina, where their mechanic said the vacuum hose had been shaken off. Took 5 second to fix it. Damn rocks!...lol.

It’s a really beautiful place dry pine bay all the way down to Hartley bay is what I’ve fished. We stayed at schells a couple of times next to dry pine bay and then at flat rapids a bunch, I grew up going there. If you know where the rocks are you can get right in to the recollet falls. The fishing has definitely dropped off over the years in my opinion, but lots of people still get ‘em. I wonder if you ever fished the fast water in front of schells for pickerel Arnie?
