After a 4 year break, I returned to Lake Simcoe to try my luck with a friend this past Thursday.

We set out from Big Bay Point and started the day fishing the bottom of a break in 90'-110'. Immediately we were marking fish but weren't able to get any bites. I was using a Menace and my friend was using a Meegz. I had my secondary line suspended 1'-2' off bottom jigging a vibrato as an attractor.

We moved around throughout the morning, trying between 30'-60' and back down to 100' again. Surface conditions were as good as it gets for walking so around noon we decided to walk over towards Oro.

Our last set of holes were in 70' off the base of a shoal when my drill battery died so we ended up fishing this location a while longer. After an hour or so of having marked only one fish, I hooked into an unmarked fish on bottom. It felt like a whitefish on the way up but to my surprise was a burbot.

Caught on the Menace:

We eventually made our way back to Big Bay Point and tried a couple of our old holes but didn't have any luck.

A note on ice conditions- there was still plenty of black ice, good luck to anyone that gets out this weekend. Pack your rain gear!

A face only a mom or another burbot would love. Very nice patterns and colours though. Very nicely done

Mike, I usually have better luck in the Detroit R earlier than the SCR, only by a week or so. Last year April 9 in D and 16 in SCR

Those are an amazing species, they look almost prehistoric.

Very cool! They are also delicious... but don't tell anyone. With the popularity gaining on targeting this species, I wonder if they will ever place a catch limit on them
