I stopped by Port Bolster this afternoon to check things out.
Only two walkers out on the ice as far as the eye can see! Shoreline at the PB main and soccer fields is holding up. Creek mouth is wide open and flowing but the ice is accessible to the right. I walked couple hundred feet, ice is deteriorating but holding. I could see holes opened up from run off draining, definitely be careful (ATV-wheel-eating-sized holes).
Talked to Taj, he has guests arriving tomorrow and fishing the weekend.
With temps dipping back down to negatives we just might have a couple more weekends to chase hawgs!

Port Bolster was good on the 21st. Still machines out but the shoreline is deteriorating rapidly. When we talked to Taj he was optimistic that the cooler temps this week would keep the ice fishable for a while yet. The thinnest the ice got in all the spots we tried was about 12-13" and it's honeycombing in the top 2 or 3".
We first tried around the Talbot river and thank God we had our spud with us or the day would have ended much sooner. It was impossible to see the difference between safe and unsafe ice. We watched someone go through on an ATV and after spudding for a while, still couldn't find a safe path past 5 feet of water.
Bottom line? Be extra careful, but the perching was on fire.
