I am wondering if anyone on heregoes ice fishing in the harbour. If so I am wondering if the fishing is any good and what you normally catch?

Thanks

Hey mlswick, I fish the harbour all the time. Ice fishing isn't great there as we don't get a lot of ice.
I know some guys were fishing there this weekend. They had 4" of ice at pier 4. But after this warm spell, and rain it will be gone.
You can catch pretty much anything in the harbour, perch, pike, rainbow, browns, crappie, you name it.

Hey mswick, do you live in the Hamilton area? If the harbour ever does freeze I know some great spots in 30' of water.
Cheers!

A friend of mine fished the channel at peir 4 Sunday. Said he had 4" of ice, But the shoreline is sketchy!!! He said if you accessed at the boat launch it was fine. Stay away from the shoreline edge!
He said he didn't catch anything. Lol hardly seems worth the risk to me.
Also heard the local conservation areas are close to being ready.
It would be nice to be able to fish local ice this year.
Cheers!

Any updates on this? I can't seem to find anywhere that reliably updates the ice thickness. As a beginner in ice fishing it'd be nice to know when it's safe or not.

I go to school in Hamilton and would like to go out to the Harbour on weekends, just need to know when its safe...

How do you know when its even safe enough to go test the thickness with holes?

Went out yesterday for a little bit, a good 5-6 inches of ice at Bayfront park, no luck though.

Did you fish in the channel? It can be tough there. I find the best bite is just before the sun comes up and right at dusk. I may go tomorrow. But not in the channel.
Cheers!

Nope. We were out in front of the beach but really didnt stay long. Although I was thinking of trying the channel, this monster pike looks like its right in the middle of the channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nrry2mtAgxk

Was thinking of using some live bait (was using tubes and spoons), any idea where I could get some locally?

There's a bait and tackle shop on Barton near centennial parkway. They should be able to hook you up with whatever live bait you need.
