The OPP is warning about the dangers of thin ice after a vehicle that fell through the ice in Mitchell’s Bay Monday afternoon.

Police say that a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado fell through the ice it was parked on while the owner was ice fishing nearby. The pick-up was 500 metres from the shore. No injuries were reported and the vehicle will be removed at the owners expense.

OPP warn again, that ice does not freeze at a uniform thickness across most lakes and rivers. Ice that has formed over flowing water, springs, pressure cracks, old ice holes or around the mouths of rivers and streams can be weaker than surrounding ice. Clear blue ice is the strongest. White or opaque ice is much weaker. Ice that has a honeycombed look, common during thaws or in the spring, should be avoided altogether.

Traveling on frozen lakes or rivers with snowmobiles, atv’s or other vehicles can be particularly dangerous and added precautions must be taken. At least 20 centimeters (eight inches) of clear blue ice is required for snowmobiles and 30 centimeters (12 inches) or more is needed for most light vehicles. Double this amount if the ice is white or opaque.

Police say that when you venture out on ice, you’re not only putting your own life at risk, but the lives of first responders as well, should an ice rescue be required.

The OPP are asking area anglers and sportsman to take extra precautions on ice and to remember that no ice-is safe ice.
