Ladies and Gents Today i picked up two spools of Torpedo wire from Grimsby Tackle. Being new to wire i would like to know a recommended knot for tying the wire to the spool. I plan on not using any backing as the reel capacity suits the amount of wire purchased. I have had no luck searching this online and there is no instructions on the wire packets. The only thing i have found is to use electrical tape after the knot on the spool to give the wire something to dig into and not slip on the spool. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. cheers Chris

Thanks Longshank......... The reels are Shimano Tekota 600LCS. The wire is 7 strand 30 pound i believe but since i am stuck at work i will have to wait to check the packets for a website. The fellows at Grimsby recomended it. What a great shop and helpfull people. I bothered them for two hours. When i finish work i will have another look. I already like the thought of backing as i truly believe that wire will slip without it. Thanks, i will get back to you. Cheers Chris

longshank........What type of backing are you using. I found the website you mentioned and it helps a lot. Do you ever use a small barrel swivel instead of a direct knot? Cheers Chris

Okay,I think i am starting to get this. Mono tied direct to spool to stop the braid from slipping.........Ten yards or so. Clinch knot to barrel swivel.........Then a polamar knot to braid from the other end of swivel. Load on braid backing........not sure how much yet. Polamar knot to swivel when done.........Then a haywire twist on the other end of swivel to tie the wire. Is this making any sense. I have put 1000 feet of wire on a reel by itself. I plan on working backwards untill i get my numbers correct. Now adding braid.....mono, then loading this to a empty reel. Thanks for letting me in your backyard. Cheers Chris

I would have to strip mine down to see exactly how much of each I have, but not going to do that until I need to respool again.
I know I feel confortable with about 1600 feet on a reel.......no fish except one has ever spooled me with that mount of line on.
But many do peel out 400-800 with little problem unless you really winch down your drag and that's when you hear about bust-offs too much, so 1000 feet is very borderline in my opinion, plus every now and then you will lose a few yards of terminal wire due to frays and or just abuse

That makes sense. The wire only came in 1000 foot spools. Thats why i am working backwards and loading the reel with wire first.,then the braid, then the mono, then finaly loading to another reel. Hopefully getting enough braid to suit. Thanks Longshank.
