I'm just curious if anyone has ice fished the bay. I know Jerry tried for a few hours but has anyone else done so and have you had any success. Might try tomorrow afternoon for a few hours.

I was curious if anyone fishes the bay in the summer. Being in a kayak it looks like a nice place to spend an evening. Anyone know what swims in there?

We have fished in March before but that is when the ice melted early last year. There are pike, bass, crappie, perch, trout and salmon, basically anything that swims in Lake Ontario can be in that bay. I was just curious how the ice fishing was. A kayak would be perfect to fish it.

i've heard the ice is about 16" there but becoming slushy. I'm heading there Sunday to try it out for the first time but since you are going there tomorrow you would know before me. Good luck, i've heard that minnows are key.

Npetersen,
That would be great!! I'm thinking of going there with my boys so I want to be 100% that its safe and they'll have a good time. I won't have much time to really "fish", i'm just there to spend some time with the little guys! The wife is going to a baby shower 15 minutes from there so I figured it would be good cuz its close BUT if its sloppy out there I was thinking of going to VB in simcoe. Good luck out there.. If you have the Navionics app it really helps with depth there. Shoot me a PM if you don't and I can always send you a screen shot.

Frenshmans is awesome haven't been there in years but if you catch a pike with an ice fishong rod dangling from its mouth its mine and I'd like it returned please.
Used to fish there all the time when I lived in pickering lots of pike and quite a few hatchery rainbows to catch. I've also witnessed a massive walleye get caught there and the guy was going to keep it but another fisherman offred the guy 20 bucks to let it go and he did.
Also witnessed big perch come out of there although they are pretty few and far between.
Stay as far away from the channel coming in from lake ontario as you can as the current comes in pretty strong off the lake and the ice is thin there even if every where else has 16".

Thanks for the pics Fat Rap, I'm getting excited now. I can't believe we have lived here for 15 years and have never fished there until last spring. That was open water and this will be our first hard water experience. I guess the grass always looks greener on the other side. Or should I say the fish seem better after driving an hour to get there
Those pike look really healthy but I don't think I would keep any since we are so close to the nuke plant. We have lots of fish in the freezer anyway, just going out for the fun of it.
I'm going to pass on Scugog and give Frenchmen's a go since my wallet can't afford a rescue plus we have never had much luck there. Thanks for the tips as well Putaforkinya. I'll let you know how we make out.

We went out to Frenchman's Bay this afternoon and Jerry joined us. It was a nice afternoon with just a bit of a cool north wind. Walking out was fine, a bit of slush on the top but not too bad. We passed a couple of people who had a pike on the ice which I guess was about 4 lbs that they had caught 2 hrs earlier.
We got set up in 10 fow and waited... and waited... Jerry wasn't marking much on the screen but every once in a while, a few would show up. He did have a fish on but it came off right at the hole which was a small perch. I tried serveral different rigs but only managed a couple of really light taps and that was it and hubby had the same results. We were out for about 3 1/2 hrs and not a single fish landed. We also didn't see people catching much either except small perch and not many at that. There was about 8 other people on the ice.
We can't complain about the drive (only 14 minutes from our house) and we can't complain about the weather. I'm sure we will be back again since we get a little more sunlight after work now. I didn't actually measure the thickness but would guess there was about 10 inches. If it does melt soon, we will be shore fishing for pike since they are open until the end of March.
Hopefully we will have better luck tomorrow at the Meet & Greet.
