estimated over 10,000 herring fish dead on niagara river fort erie ON mar 25 2013

I was talking to a man who was photographing the dead fish and he knew a lot about it being one species and he’s investigated this before.

He says there has been no fluctuation in the water temperatures recorded on the Niagara River, even though that is what people are being told.

The Ministry of Environment are hard to get a hold of according to him, and they haven’t been investigating the mass deaths of fish in the area.

look more like moon eye...they just finished spawning (I think) near the end of March..I suppose the big fish orgy was too much for them....not a bad way to go.

They are Gizzard Shad, part of the herring family. There are frequent winter kills of this species around the great lakes.

Deranger is right gizzard shad. Happens often after winter not a big deal. Feeds the birds.
Cheers!

The winter kill of gizzard shad has been extremely high on Lake Erie this year, there a very fragile species and are extremely temperature sensitive. There have been massive kills through out the lake, it is a normal occurence this time of year but this years kill is a high level. It may just be natures way of keeping the population in check, I know I have netted them while getting emeralds and they die almost immediatly after being put in the bucket.

thats to bad. them chad's put up a good fight. used to catch them hand over fist in frenchman's before they changed everything around and chased most of the spring fish out.

i hope that doesn't hurt the population of smallies ofr other preditory fish that eat them.
