Once again I must say thanks to the USA for giving the Canadians another potential disaster to our waters. The invasion of the Asian Carp a fish that eats everyting in it's path to destruction, a fish that was being raised for the Asian food market. I'm wandering what it will take before our Canadian Gov. tells the USA to dam up the MISSISSIPPI so we don't any more of there Screw ups they have with nature eco system. They should Dam the river for water control and the prevention of fish contamination to our great lakes. In my opinion the USA should only allow exotic fish farming in land lock lakes where there is no danger of them escaping to the Great Lakes

Not allowing it at all is a much more sensible solution.

Come on guys, let's tone down the emotions a tad. The American's are our neighbours and best friends to boot. Many of them are very actively addressing this problem. In addition, they love to come to our Lakes and fish adding much needed revenues to the local economies.

Agreed Thorah Guy!

without the U.S. very few of us would have jobs not to mention the greatlakes fisheries wouldnt be near as good (lake O). they are also much better in addresing fisheries issues than we are by far. These asian carp are terrible no doubt hopefully we can some hoe stop them.

I'm with Gord and king killer on this one. TwoDogsf, maybe you should get your facts straight too. You make it seem like the US government is responsible for the carp. It's the black market that we have to thank.

Also, I'd like to see your proof of this pipeline that is syphoning great lakes water into the Mississippi.

They were origanally in "inland ponds' in the southern US.

The balme game on this one is not going to get us anywhere.......it's been on going dialogue with both the US and Canada on best methods to prevent an invasion.....might have already happend .who knows for certain.

The fact that we allow importation of this species into Canada for sale is of concern to me.

Hey Mark, I watched a good article on the issue a while back on NATGEO I think it was. There is one they have a last line of defense being electric fences near the entrance to the lake. There was lots of question whether the fences actually worked and even more if they had installed them in time. I watched the videos of these fish jumping as they are startled by boats and they are a real actual danger to life and limb also. You wouldn't want to be doing 30 mph and have a 20 lb fish flying into you. Ouch!

Hey Hooker,
I spend enough money on fishing gear, I don't want to have to buy football gear incl. helmet just to go fishing. These things are nasty, check out the link I attached.

just wanted to add that I am pretty sure that the asian carp were not introduced to america in the asian food market. They were introduced by Catfish farmers who wanted to use the "eat everything in its path" nature of the fish to clean out their ponds of algae/parasites/etc. then the carp gradually spread from their ponds by way of floods and very likely also some careless farmers.

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure thats the story. I don't believe they were intentionally released to later be harvested (like the infamous snakehead).

You are correct Fishinguy14, that is exactly how it was stated in the documentry I saw. Flooding in the Mississippi delta caused the carp to get into the tributaries and then it was all over. The big issue is that the US let the fish into the country without anyone looking at the what ifs. Now much of N America might pay for that ignorance.
